Iowa City’s Broken Spoke Makes List of Bicycle Friendly Businesses

Some good news for our little corner of the world; the League of American Bicyclists (originally founded in 1880 as the League of American Wheelmen, which I personally find to be a much cooler name) has published its annual list of Bicycle Friendly Businesses, and Iowa City’s own Broken Spoke bike shop has made the list, along with 31 other businesses around the country. That’s a nice mark for a state that the same organization ranked 21 out of 50 in terms of cycling friendliness — while Iowa in general, and Iowa City specifically, still have progress to make, business like the Broken Spoke contribute to the cultural acceptance of bicycling as a viable transportation alternative.

On a bit of a side note, two fine breweries made the list of 2009 awardees: New Belgium Brewing Company and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. While Sam Adams still holds the master key to this cyclist’s heart, both of these companies make a damn good beer (New Belgium’s Mothership Wit is especially delicious after a long ride… or after no ride at all), so what better way to support bike-friendly business than with a pint?
